Professor Adelino V.M. Canario received his PhD from the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK). He is a professor of Cell Biology and Reproductive Physiology, Director of the Centre for Marine Sciences at the University of Algarve, and professor (1000 Talents) at Shanghai Ocean University. He has contributed with over 230 peer-reviewed articles and 7 book chapters.
Prof. Canario’s research interests centre on the role of hormones in reproduction (sex determination and puberty), social and reproductive behaviour, chemical communication and ion regulation in fishes, using a range of approaches from classical physiology and endocrinology to “omics”.
Prof. Canario’s research has been supported by grants from the Foundation for Science and Technology of Portugal, the European Commission and NATO. He is a leading scientist and a driver of several European initiatives including recently the research infrastructure European Marine Biology Research Centre. He seats in the advisory committee for Foundation for Science and Technology, represents Portugal in the Scientific Committee for Antarctic Research and is strongly involved in the development of bilateral collaborations between Portugal and China.
Prof. Canario was vice-president of the European Society of Comparative Endocrinology and the Iberian Association of Comparative Endocrinology, and is associate editor of Gene, General Comparative Endocrinology, Aquaculture, Aquaculture and Fisheries, Heliyon (all from Elsevier) and Fishes (MDPI).
