Professor Deborah M Power is Professor of Biotechnology at the Universidade do Algarve, Portugal and Co-ordinates the Aquaculture and Biotechnology section of the Marine Science Research Centre, Portugal. Prof Power received her PhD from The Faculty of Medicine, University of Liverpool, UK. After post-doctoral training at St Georges Hospital, UK she was recruited by the Directorate of Fisheries Research, Ministry of Agriculture Fisheries and Food, UK. Subsequently she moved to Portugal and established the Laboratory of Comparative Endocrinology and Integrative Biology with Prof. AVM Canario.
Prof. Power´s research area is comparative endocrinology and integrative biology of fish and mollusks and her research focusses on hormones in development and growth and fish metamorphosis. Current research is targeting the endocrine system and imprinting and innate immunity in fish and molluscs in a changing environment. From an applied perspective outputs have contributed to improve aquaculture through genetics, imprinting in eggs and larvae and diagnostic tools. In this context Prof. Power developed service platforms offering high quality research services (http://ccmar.ualg.pt) for Academia and industry. Prof Power was awarded a merit professorship for women by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden (2011-2012) and was recently recognized with an Honorary Doctorate for her contribution to fish aquaculture by the University of Gothenburg (2012). Prof Power was appointed in 2015 as a distinguished researcher by Athlone institute of Technology, Athlone, Ireland. In 2015, she became a Shanghai Oversea expert program. Professor Power is an active and visible member of the international Scientific community and is an Editor-in-Chief of General and Comparative Endocrinology, the premier journal in the field and serves on the editorial board for several other international journals. Prof Power is Vice President of the International Federation for the Societies of Comparative Endocrinology (IFSCE), Vice President of the European Comparative Endocrinology Society, and completed a term (2017) as President of the Iberian Society of Comparative Endocrinology (AIEC). She has been Vice chair annually since 2012 for the evaluation of the European Union’s Marie Curie actions (MSCA) and serves on many domestic and international grant review panels.
