Dr. Shaojun Liu received his BS in Biology in 1986 and his MS in Developmental Biology in 1989 at Hunan Normal University. He got his Ph.D. in Zoology in 2000 at Sun Yat-sen University. From 1998 to 1999, he researched for one year on fish molecular biology in France supported by China Scholarship Council. He became associate professor in 1995, and professor in 1998.
Now he is the director of State Key Laboratory of Developmental Biology of Freshwater Fish, and the director of Biology Research Institute of Hunan Province, as well as the vice president of the college of life sciences of Hunan Normal University. He took about 30 years to conduct a systemic research on fish distant hybridization. He made a large number of fish distant crosses to create a series of newly tetraploid lineages and diploid lineages, which formed new fish resources and could be used to produce the improved triploid and diploid fish, respectively. Meanwhile, he made a systemic research to reveal the genetic characteristics and reproductive characteristics of hybrid fish, formed a scientific theoretical system of fish distant hybridization.
He is also the Distinguished Young Scholar of NSFC, Distinguished Professor of Hunan “Lotus Scholar”, National Outstanding Science and Technology Worker, National Outstanding Teacher, Hunan Scientific and Technological Pioneer.
As the first author or corresponding author, he published more than 130 academic papers in PNAS, Genetics, Biology of Reproduction, Heredity, BMC Genomics, Scientific Reports, and other journals, including 98 SCI papers.
As the first person (2011) and fourth person (2003), he got the second-class prize of National Scientific and Technological Progress Award. As the first person, he got the Advanced Team Award of National Professional and Technical Personnel (2014), the first-class Prize of Science and Technology (2008), the first-class Prize of Technology Invention (2015) of Hunan Province. As the first person, he obtained 24 national invention patents. Under his supervision, 21 doctoral students, 56 graduate students and 3 post-doctors were successfully graduated. What’s more, he took charge of more than 30 state and province level research projects including the National Natural Science Fund for Distinguished Young Scholars, 2 general items and 4 key items from NSFC, key item of International Cooperation and Exchanges of NSFC, the National Basic Research Program of China (973 Program) and so on.
He is the member of the editorial board of some academic journals such as Frontiers in Genetics (Livestock Genomics), Journal of Microbiology and Genetics, Zoological Research, Journal of Fisheries of China, Journal of Fishery Sciences of China and so forth.
