Dr. Liu is a professor at School of Life Sciences, Sun Yat-sen University. He is a also a council member of Aquatic Biotechnology of the Chinese Aquatic Society, a council member of Comparative Physiology of the Chinese Physiology Society,
Dr. Liu focuses his research on fish reproductive physiology and molecular endocrinology, as well as fish genetics and breeding. Using zebrafish as a model and latest gene knockout technique, he studies molecular mechanisms of sex differentiation, gametogenesis and spawning. He also studies reproductive biology of economically important fish such as protogynous hermaphroditic grouper with a focus in the molecular mechanisms of gonadal formation and sex reversal. He has carried out crossbreeding among different grouper species, and has cultivated a new hybrid species with significant high rates of fast growth, survival, and disease resistance. Dr. Liu has published more than 80 research articles in peer-reviewed journals with more than 1140 citations. He also holds 10 Chinese invention patents.
